Sometimes known as "Spirit Writing", automatic writing is the process of producing writing without any deliberate or conscious thought about what is being written. It may be done in a dissociated or altered state of consciousness. This can just as easily be done with a pen or computer keyboard. The handwriting may be in the same style and the same size as the writer's normal or vastly different. The language of the text may be the same as the writer'smother tongue or another language, even one that he/she cannot speak. The words may be written correctly or mispelt, the text may run on and on without spaces or may be punctuated correctly. The text may be written in reverse, starting at the bottom right corner and working its way up the page.
You do not have to be gifted to do this type of writing and indeed there are several websites devoted to showing novices how to be successful in automatic writing. It appears that practice and persistance are the keys to eventually managing to write something down.
Various forms of automatic writing go back to ancient times (the planchette for example). In Ancient China a sieve or stick would be used to write Chinese characters in sand. orashes. This is known as Fuji writing.
Spiritualism in the 19th century popularised this form of divination and there are several famous cases throughout recent history.
There are various theories as to what is happening during automatic writing. Some people believe that a spirit entity can somehow manipulate the writer's arm and pencil. Other suggestions are that the person is writing messages which stem from the subconscious mind, or which are obtained through extra sensory perception. Another possibility is that the message is conveyed from a spirit to the writer who then documents what she/he is hearing or sensing and in this case the writer is fully aware of what he/she is writing. There are some people who believe that "spirit" writing and "automatic" writng are different and that the first involves the writer being aware of what is being written down and the second being done in an altered state of consciousness.
Sceptics would argue, however, that automatic writing is merely a parlour game and the result of ideomotor action. If anything meaningful is written then this is surely the result of subconscious desires or ideas.

Automatic writing can be as dangerous if not more so than using a ouija board.
Although some websites and spirit writers will say that the activity is harmless and is a good way to meet your spirit guide, please be wary. Contrary to popular belief that all messages received will be positive and for the good, there are cases where the opposite has happened.
Some people strongly believe that automatic writing can leave the writer open to spirit possession. If it is true that a spirt is somehow manipulating the writer's arm then this partial possession could potentially be dangerous. Spirit discernment is therefore a very useful skill to have before attempting such an exercise
What makes this even more dangerous than the ouija board is that it is normally a solitary activity. The person doing the writing often forms some kind of relationship with whatever is doing the writing. If the 'spirit' i is a low, malicious entity then it may start off with kind words, praise and flattery and even provide evidence of an afterlife to the writer that will be accepted as proof by them. The writer may become addicted to writing, may turn to writing in periods of unhappiness or loneliness looking for comfort and kind words.
People still widely encourage people to use this as a method of communicating with spirit guides. However, if you have no skill of sensing spirit this method is not recomended. After all there could be a mad axe murderer standing next to you just waiting for an opportunity and you would be completely oblivious and freely offereing the use of part of your body.
If you opened your door and put up and sign for anybody to come in and chat sooner or later you would let in somebody who wanted to take advantage of the situation. You just wouldn't open your door to strangers like that so why lend them you body!!
The second thing is that the communication given can be so easily understood. With enough practice, it will eventually read as proper sentences and give clear warnings/advice or whatever. No beating about the bush. No way a word or phrase could be misinterpreted. The communication becomes more 'real' and personal and ultimately quite addictive.
If the messages to come from spirits, then some of these people may still lie and deceive, manipulate as they did in life. Just because they don't have a physical body anymore mean they think any differently to how they did before they died. It's kind of like receiving an anonymous phone call. You wouldn't believe all you were being told so you should treat any writing the same way, unless, of course, you are skilled enough to sense or 'feel' who is responsible for the messages. As with the ouija board the spiritt picks you, you do not pick the spirit to be communicated with. The spirits will tell you they are whoever you want them to be. If you want angels they will tell you that they are angels. Without discernment you will not know and before long you may be possessed.
As in the case of the ouija there is common pattern, a nasty spirit will try to give survival evidence and a relationship starts to build up between the person and spirit. Then the spirit tries to encourage a clairvoyant communication. Usually the spirit is friendly and protective until the person tells it to leave permanently. This is when it turns nasty and shows its true colours.. Physical phenomenon, hearing voices, nightmares, paranoia, relationship breakdown, ill health can all ensue. The spirit cannot harm you directly but can wear you down, ruin your life, promote suicidal thoughts etc. Its ultimate goal is to destroy you.
This is something that is not publicised enough. and as a result lots of people are giving it a bash with no idea of the danger they are in. It's not to say that automatic writting can't be a valuable tool to the medium but if anybody wants to communicate with spirits there is the quick and dangerous way or the proper safe way....develop your own ability, before using tools. Walk before you can run!
