Castle History

Vil God I Zal
(God Willing I Shall)

Castle Menzies is a beautiful  Z-plan type castle dating from the 16th century.  It is situated to the West of Weem, near Aberfeldy, Perthshire.  The castle stands on the site of an earlier fortification known as the "Place of Weem" which was built in 1488 by Sir Robert Menzies. This initial castle was burnt down in 1502 by Neil Stewart of Garth Castle. A short walk away are the remarkable walled gardens (neglected for over 50 years) which have also been reacquired.
Below you will find a brief outline of the castle's history.  For a more detailed report click here.

Paranormal Activity

The castle is home to various types of alleged paranormal activity and has been subjected to several paranormal investigations by different teams.  The curator, Mr Jack, has been careful not to divulge any information about the exact nature of the paranormal activity experienced over the years or to share the findings of the previous teams.  He wishes to compare the results from each of the paranormal investigations carried out to see if there are any similarities.  However, we were told in advance of the investigation that there have been various unexplainable sounds heard within the castle, certain odours are said to manifest fom time to time, and there are also reports of a particular door frequently closing by itself.

Preliminary Feelings

Here are Tori's thoughts prior to and immediately after entering the castle:

Prior to our investigation of Castle Menzies I was told little about the history of the building.
We arrived at the castle some 20 mins before the rest of the team so we had a
chance to have a look round.
There
were three main areas that had a strong feel to them. These were

1. the pink room and adjoining room
2.the
little room with low ceiling (room 15)
3.the Victorian room.

The pink room and adjoining room
As soon as I entered this room I felt that there was something
in this room, like the feeling that ‘we were not
alone’or that
of being watched. I mentioned this to the curator and asked if
there had been anything linked to
this room. He said that he wasn’t
going to tell me. Then I told him that there was something in the room.
He then
said that 'yes' there have been reports of things linked to this room.
When we walked through the room next to the pink
room I saw a
figure beside the lamp near the fireplace. It was quite little and I saw the shape of
head and shoulders as it faded
away towards the floor. Mike took
a photo but nothing unusual was caught on this picture.

The pink room vigil.
I felt the presence of two spirits in this room. One male and one female.
I felt slightly uneasy as we sat
quietly. I could sense a lot of
movement like people walking backwards and forwards across the hall.
We weren’t
getting much on camera so decided to try the small room next
to the pink room.  In the room I sat on the floor
and felt breezes across
my face. I felt like the temperature dropped. I felt more uneasy in this room.
I did
get the impression of children though dismissed this due to me
thinking it could have been an assumption
based on the height
of the figure I had seen and never said anything about it (I think). I did
mention, however,
the fragrance of candles at one point. I sensed somebody
watching me from corner of my eye and looked round to
see a little girl of what
I thought was aged between 8 and 12 in front of the window area.
I couldn’t see her very clearly in the dark but she
was only a few feet away staring
straight at me and was completely solid. She had what appeared to be puffy

sleeves/shoulders on her clothing/dress and had long hair, which I think may have
 been blond though I cant
be sure. She had a cloth over her hair with some sort
of lace on it, reminding me of the lace material that
Catholic women sometimes wear
to cover their hair. Her clothing was a pale grey or green colour. I looked away

and when I looked back she had gone. Mags felt very cold at this point and I felt like
 I was getting colder.
I think that was because we were both sitting on the floor,
that this child wanted to play with us. I had the
thought that she was curious and
wanted to reach out and touch my nose ring. I felt uneasy at this.

The little room with the low roof

This room was small and had nothing in it. I didn’t like this room as it
made me feel slightly sick and just
not pleasant at all. I never saw or sensed
anything else about this room but I didn’t like it and found

that it had a very strong atmosphere. I wanted to leave it quickly.

The Victorian bedroom

When I walked into this room I felt all horrible and shivery. I had the sensation
of getting my hair touched
and I felt a pressure on my head. My limbs felt
tingly and it was very intense. I think there was a female
in there. Perhaps the
lady of the house. I was in this room a few other times and it was never as intense as the

first time I went in. Mags felt horrible in this room as well and felt that it wasn’t as bad
as the first time
we had gone in.

The rest of the castle

There was a feeling throughout the castle and I found that the quietest place was
the kitchen area. The shop did
feel strange but I put this down to it being a narrow
room painted dark red. I did feel a change from halfway
through the shop and
this feeling continued through into the corridor for about the length of another room then

changed again back to a quiet feeling.

I didn’t pick up on anything in the Victorian wing and felt a pressure on my head and I sensed
something
in the attic area but due to the fact that it wasn’t extremely strong and that
there were bats there we opted
not to waste too much time in there. The bats could
have given us false positive readings. The two other bedrooms
felt fairly strange
and all the other small rooms felt about the same.

Prior to the investigation

During the weeks leading to the investigation I picked up on a fair bit of
information about the castle.

I felt that the main spirit in the castle was a lady of nobility, perhaps the lady
of the house. She was
quite a flirt and mischievous and I felt she would offer a lot
of interaction. I felt that there were two other
men who were with her, but I couldn’t
tell anything else about them though I thought one might be of nobility
as well.

I picked up on a man with his head in bandages quite disoriented being pushed back down
into his bed though
he tried to get out of bed. I picked up on a woman who died in
childbirth, though I wasn’t sure if she
was nobility or had been in service there.

I picked up on something in the garden and was told there was something to do with ‘dragon’ or I should talk
about a ‘dragon’ but I also think that
this may be something to do with an old myth or story from way back
that is associated with the area.

I picked up that the gardens had been very important to a member of the family who took great pride
in them and
may have even tried to introduce plants from other countries. I wanted to say that
he was the lords sons
but I wasn’t 100% sure of that.

I saw a lot of violence and blood linked to the place. I saw that a man had been slashed
across his gut with
a large knife or sword. Not stabbed but cut right across.
I believe this now to have meant dismemberment.

At the castle

I picked up that the lady of the house was well aware of us in most of the castle
but not in the kitchen
areas downstairs.

I picked up on there being two or more children there. One girl and I think there
may be a boy as well though
I never encountered him.

Conclusion

Any castle of this period would have experienced its share of bloodshed, women dying in childbirth etc and it is difficult to corroborate certain pieces of information that Tori has given us.  However, what is exciting for the team is the fact there is indeed a local legend concerning a dragon and this is linked to the castle.  None of the team were aware of this prior to the investigation as we had limited the amount of research done until afterwards to avoid entering the castle with preconceived ideas about what we might have encountered there.  Click here to read about the dragon.

The other fascinating piece of information given by Tori concerns the garden and how it was very important to someone, maybe the laird's son, and the informattion about acquiring plants from abroad.  Could this be the famous Archibald Menzies, naval surgeon and botanist, who started off of by working in the castle gardens and who introduced several new species to this country?  Or could it be one of the many other Menzies from the local area who also  worked in the castle gardens?
